How many accessible spaces
The minimum number of accessible spaces is based on the total spaces in each lot:
- 1 to 25 spaces: 1 accessible
- 26 to 50: 2
- 51 to 75: 3
- 76 to 100: 4
- 101 to 150: 5
- 151 to 200: 6
- 201 to 300: 7
- 301 to 400: 8
- 401 to 500: 9
- Larger lots and medical facilities have additional rules.
Van-accessible spaces
At least one of every six accessible spaces, and at least one in every lot, must be van-accessible.
Sizes
Standard accessible stalls are at least 96 inches wide with an adjacent access aisle at least 60 inches wide. Van-accessible spaces need either a 132-inch-wide stall with a 60-inch aisle, or a 96-inch stall with a 96-inch aisle. Aisles must be marked so no one parks in them, and accessible spaces need signs.
Location
Accessible spaces should be on the shortest accessible route to the building entrance.
Check local rules
State and local codes can add requirements. Your striping crew lays out spaces to current standards, but the property owner is responsible for compliance.
Questions
Do I need a van-accessible space in a small lot?
Yes. Every lot with accessible spaces needs at least one van-accessible space.
Does the access aisle need hatching?
Aisles must be marked to discourage parking. Hatched striping is the common way to do it.
